Subjects and grading

How to set up the subjects students study and the grade scales that map marks to letter grades.

Subjects and grading

Subjects are what students learn (Math, Science, English). Each program has its own subject list — CBSE primary subjects are different from B.Tech subjects. Inside a program, every class follows the same list.

Adding subjects

  1. From the menu: Setup → Academics → Subjects.
  2. Pick the program from the dropdown.
  3. Click + Subject.
  4. Fill in:

- Name — like "Mathematics". - Code — short code (MATH, SCI, ENG) used as a column header. - Type — Core, Elective, or Co-curricular. - Max marks default — overridable per exam.

  1. Save.

Core, elective, co-curricular

  • Core subjects — taken by every student in the program (Math, English).
  • Elective — students pick (Physics vs Commerce streams).
  • Co-curricular — Art, Physical Education. Often graded with letters instead of marks.

When a student is admitted to an elective-based program, they pick electives. Their subject list updates accordingly.

Grade scales

A grade scale maps a percentage range to a letter grade.

Built-in scales

  • 10-point CBSE — A1 (91–100), A2 (81–90), B1, B2, … E (below 33).
  • 5-point ICSE — A, B, C, D, E.
  • A-F US — A (90+), B (80+), C (70+), D (60+), F (below).
  • Pass / Fail — for skill-based co-curricular subjects.

Custom scales

Setup → Exams → Grade Scales → + Custom. Define your own bands and pick which subjects use them.

Assigning subject teachers

Each subject in a class needs a teacher. Set up at Staff → Teacher Assignments or directly on the class detail page. See Assigning teachers to classes.
